Abstract

This study aims to explore the influence of interpersonal relationship quality on the tendency of phubbing behavior in student friendships in Padang City. This research was conducted using a quantitative approach and correlational design. The sample selection was done through non-probability sampling method with purposive sampling technique. A total of 275 students were involved as respondents in this study. The data collection instruments used were the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP) and the Peer Relationship Scale which were arranged using the Likert model. To analyze the data, simple linear regression analysis technique was used. The findings in this study indicate that there is a significant negative influence between the quality of interpersonal relationships and phubbing behavior in student friendships, with a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05) and a regression coefficient of -0.468. the coefficient of determination is 35.1%. The strength of this relationship is also supported by the R² value of 0.351, which means that the quality of interpersonal relationships contributes 35.1% to variations in student phubbing behavior. This finding shows that Ha is accepted and Ho is rejected. This means that the higher the quality of interpersonal relationships in student friendships, the lower their tendency to phubbing. Conversely, students who have low interpersonal relationship quality will be more prone to phubbing behavior.
