The Influence of Emotional Intelligence and Perceived Social Support on Academic Anxiety in New Students of Padang State University

This study aims to determine the influence of emotional intelligence and perceived social support on academic anxiety of new students at Padang State University. The researcher used the academic anxiety scale (Batubara, 2022), the emotional intelligence scale (Maryam & Rusli, 2021), and the Indonesian adaptation of the multidimensional scale of perceived social support (MSPSS) by Sulistiani, Fajrianthi, and Kristiana (2022) to measure the three variables in this study. The sample used was 385 new students at Padang State University with a purposive sampling technique. The data obtained were analyzed using multiple regression analysis techniques. The research findings show that emotional intelligence and perceived social support, both simultaneously and partially, have a significant effect on academic anxiety. These results indicate that Ha1, Ha2, and Ha3 are accepted. The form of influence found is a positive influence. This indicates that if emotional intelligence and perceived social support increase, academic anxiety will also increase. The magnitude of the influence value or coefficient of determination (R2) in this study found that emotional intelligence had an influence of 19.5% and perceived social support had a contribution of 9.9% to academic anxiety.
