Abstract

The deliberate use of internet access for personal purposes during lectures is an issue of concern. This phenomenon is referred to as cyberslacking, which is the behaviour of individuals consciously accessing the internet for non-academic purposes while the lecture process is in progress. The purpose of this study was to determine the role of self-control and student engagement on cyberslacking in Padang State University students. The subjects in this study were 390 students with sample selection using proported stratified random sampling technique. This study uses a questionnaire as data collection using a scale of cyberslacking, self-control and student engagement. The data analysis used is multiple regression analysis and the significance level = 0.001 (p < 0.05) which means H0 is rejected and H3 is accepted. This shows that there is a role of self-control and student engagement on cyberslacking in Padang State University students. It is hoped that universities can provide policies on the use of digital devices during lectures with the aim of reducing the level of cyberslacking in students.
