The Influence of Parental Social Support on Academic Stress among Students of State Senior High School 1 Padang

Abstract

Schools are generally seen as a place to obtain education and influence the quality of students' future lives, but it turns out to be a source of stress. The stress experienced by students is known as academic stress. Academic stress is closely related to adolescence because the school environment is one of the most identified sources of stress in adolescents. The emergence of academic stress is due to academic stressors. Basically, stress cannot be completely eliminated, but its intensity can be reduced. One of them is by providing social support from parents. This research involved 317 students consisting of classes X, XI, and XII by applying stratified random sampling techniques. The research instruments used were the parental social support scale and the academic stress scale. The data analysis used is simple regression analysis. A significance value of 0.015 (Sig. < 0.05) was obtained, meaning that the alternative hypothesis (Ha) was accepted and the null hypothesis (Ho) was rejected. This shows the influence of parental social support on students' academic stress. Parental social support contributed 1.9% to reducing academic stress.
