Abstract

This study is motivated by the many social comparison phenomena that occur amid the increasing use of Instagram among early adults and the limited issue of the influence of two-way comparisons on a person's level of life satisfaction. This study aims to determine the effect between social comparison and life satisfaction in early adult Instagram users. The research method used is quantitative. The sample in this study consisted of 329 respondents aged 18-25 years who used Instagram with purposive sampling technique. The data collection process uses The Riverside Life Satisfaction Scale (RLSS) and Social Comparison scale. The test used as an analysis in this study is multiple regression test. The results prove that there is an influence between social comparison and life satisfaction which shows that there is a negative influence on the upward comparison dimension and a positive influence on the downward comparison dimension on life satisfaction. The main conclusion of this study is that the two directions of comparison in social comparison have different roles in influencing individual life satisfaction.
