Abstract

Overseas students are individuals who pursue higher education far from their hometowns and families. This condition often leads to psychological stress due to cultural differences, new environments, and the demands of adaptation. Inability to adjust may trigger dependence on smartphones, resulting in a psychological condition known as nomophobia. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-adjustment and nomophobia among non-local students in Padang City. The research employed a quantitative correlational approach with an incidental sampling technique. A total of 384 overseas students participated in this study. Data were collected using two instruments: a self-adjustment scale based on Scheneiders' theory (1955) and the Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q 10) developed by Yildirim & Correia (2015). The data were analyzed using Pearson's correlation technique. The results revealed a significant negative correlation between self-adjustment and nomophobia. The better the self-adjustment ability, the lower the level of nomophobia experienced. This study highlights the importance of adaptive skills in coping with social and emotional pressures in new environments to prevent dependence on digital devices.
