THE EFFECT OF SELF CONTROL ON THE TOXIC ONLINE DISINHIBITION EFFECT AMONG GENERATION Z USERS OF APPLICATION X

The toxic online disinhibition effect refers to the negative tendency of the online disinhibition phenomenon, where individuals behave in ways inconsistent with their offline persona while interacting online. Generation Z, known for their high engagement with the internet and social media averaging more than four hours of daily use is particularly vulnerable to diminished self control in online interactions. This study aims to examine the extent to which self control influences the toxic online disinhibition effect among generation Z users of application X. Self control is considered a key predictor of toxic online disinhibition. This correlational quantitative study involved 478 active Gen Z users of application X. The variables were measured using two instruments: The Indonesian version of The Brief Self-Control Scale (adapted from De Ridder et al., 2011, by Arifin & Milla, 2020) and The Online Disinhibition Scale-Toxic (ODS-T), developed by Udris (2014) based on Suler’s (2004) concept and adapted into Indonesian by Kiswantomo et al. (2022). Data analysis revealed a significant negative effect of self control on toxic online disinhibition, accounting for 3.4% of the variance (R²). Higher self control was associated with lower levels of toxic online disinhibition, and vice versa. These findings highlight the importance of fostering self control as a strategy to promote safer and healthier digital interactions, particularly among younger generations such as Gen Z.
