THE EFFECT OF LONELINESS AND SELF-ESTEEM ON THE NEED FOR AFFILIATION AMONG ONLINE DATING APPLICATION USERS

Abstract

This study aims to examine the influence of loneliness and self-esteem on the need for affiliation among users of online dating applications. The increasing use of online dating platforms as a means to fulfill relational needs is particularly prevalent among emerging adults, who are more likely to experience loneliness and possess a strong drive to establish social connections. This research employed a quantitative approach with a causal correlational design. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling, with the inclusion criteria being Indonesian citizens residing in Indonesia, aged between 18 and 25 years, and active users of online dating applications. The total number of participants in this study was 152 individuals. The instruments used for data collection consisted of three psychological scales: the need for affiliation scale, the loneliness scale, and the self-esteem scale. All instruments underwent content and construct validity testing, as well as reliability and item discrimination analyses. Data analysis was conducted using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS version 4.1.1.2. The results indicated that loneliness did not have a significant effect, whereas self-esteem had a positive and significant effect on the need for affiliation. Collectively, these two variables contributed significantly to the need for affiliation, with a total effect of 49.4%. These findings suggest that individuals with higher self-esteem tend to be more proactive in building and maintaining social relationships through online dating platforms. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of the psychological factors influencing the use of online dating applications, particularly regarding the need for affiliation among individuals in emerging adulthood.
