Abstract

Shopee Paylater is a feature introduced as an innovation in the world of technology designed to make it easier for students to purchase goods. The convenience and discount offers can encourage students to shop excessively and develop a consumerist attitude without considering the risks of paying off their debts. The pressure to keep up with lifestyle trends during college can erode students' rationality, leading them to continuously pursue their desires. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between self-regulation and consumerist behavior among Shopee Paylater users. This research employs a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The respondents involved in this study are 298 Shopee Paylater users selected using snowball sampling techniques. Data collection in this study used the Consumption Behavior and Self-Regulation Scale instrument with a Likert model. Data analysis used the Spearman's rank correlation test with a p-value of < 0.05, indicating a significant negative correlation between self-regulation and consumption behavior. The results of this study indicate that the lower the self-regulation, the higher the consumptive behavior among Shopee Paylater users. Therefore, students who use the Shopee Paylater feature should be more mindful in managing themselves and their financial conditions, as well as understanding the difference between necessary needs and indulgences that may have negative consequences, such as payment defaults if they are unable to repay their debts.
