Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of online game addiction on the academic motivation of students at Padang State University. Using a quantitative approach with an explanatory survey design, this study involved 100 active students selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used were the Video Game Addiction Test (VAT) and the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS), which had been tested for validity and reliability. The results of simple regression analysis showed that online game addiction had a significant negative effect on academic motivation (β = -0.347; p = 0.000), with an R square value of 0.121. This means that online game addiction only explains 12.1% of the variation in academic motivation, while the rest is influenced by other factors such as major interest, learning style, and personality. These findings are in line with previous studies stating that online gaming addiction can reduce enthusiasm for learning, delay tasks, and reduce academic discipline. However, the majority of respondents still had high academic motivation, indicating the presence of protective factors such as time management and social support. This study emphasizes the importance of education and appropriate interventions to minimize the negative impact of online gaming addiction on students' academic motivation.
