Abstract

The high academic demands which involve a combination of theoretical classroom learning and preparation for fieldwork often lead to severe academic burnout among vocational high school (SMK) students, particularly those in 10th grade who are going through a transitional phase in their schooling. This study aims to analyze how internal capacity in the form of grit and external support in the form of peer social support can reduce the level of burnout, as well as to examine the mediating role of social support between the two. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational design. The study participants consisted of 155 students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using the Grit Scale, the School Burnout Inventory (SBI), and the Peer Social Support Scale. Data analysis was conducted using path analysis with a mediation test. The results indicate that grit has a significant negative effect on academic burnout (p = 0.020), while peer social support also has a significant negative effect on academic burnout (p = 0.044). However, grit did not have a significant effect on peer social support (p = 0.294), so peer social support did not mediate the relationship between grit and academic burnout (p = 0.353). These findings suggest that grit and social support from peers directly contribute to reducing academic burnout, but through different mechanisms.
