THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN EMOTION REGULATION STRATEGIES AND CAREER ANXIETY AMONG FINAL-YEAR STUDENTS AT UNIVERSITAS NEGERI PADANG

This study aimed to examine the relationship between emotion regulation strategies and career anxiety among final-year students at Universitas Negeri Padang. A quantitative approach with a correlational design was employed. The study involved 398 final-year students selected through purposive sampling. The instruments used were the Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (ERQ) and the Career Anxiety Scale (CAS). Data were analyzed using Spearman’s correlation test. The results indicated a significant negative relationship between the cognitive reappraisal strategy and the personal ability dimension (r = –.135; p < 0.05). This means that higher use of cognitive reappraisal corresponds with a lower tendency to feel anxious about one’s own abilities. Additionally, significant positive relationships were found between cognitive reappraisal and both the employment environment dimension (r = .156; p < 0.05) and the professional education training dimension (r = .149; p < 0.05). In other words, greater use of cognitive reappraisal was associated with higher anxiety about entering the workforce and undergoing professional training. It also opens avenues for further exploration of other contributing factors, such as work experience, in relation to career anxiety among final-year students.
